Remembering Sultan Brewster Jr., a Community Leader in the Making

Brewster, Hamady Middle School 2009

Like many of our young residents of the greater Flint area, Mr. Sultan Brewster Jr. was a talent at heart, a gentle spirit, and all around gentleman. In his secondary school years, Sultan excelled in the sports of basketball and football at Hamady High School, where he later graduated in 2013. Brewster’s dedication to self- development made him a leader long before his time.

His parents, Patricia and Sultan Brewster Sr. taught him the value of family and community service; a young man full of genuine love and loyalty to his people. In January of 2019, Sultan started an electrical apprenticeship in hopes to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He served as a volunteer at the YWCA of Greater Flint, where he supported women and children who escaped abusive home situations. Brewster’s commitment to others didn’t just stop there. He gained a special interest in teaching young men through basketball. “He was considered to be a mentor,” says his mother. His devotion to others lasted for a lifetime. A “goat” who should forever be remembered within the Flint community.

Sultan Brewster Jr., A Legend on the Rise

His legacy continues to be honored by family, friends, and his community. “I want people to know that my son lived a decent life and changed his life around,” says Patrica Brewster. He was a member of Second Friendship Missionary Baptist Church at 6040 Clio Road in Mount Morris; The same church where he later accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior. St. Patrick’s Day, Tuesday, March 17, 2020 marks the one year anniversary since his tragic death. To celebrate his life and others lost by gun violence in Flint, the family and community partners has teamed up to ensure families are served fair justice.
